Ex-BF charged for death of medical student

Mylen P. Manto - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — A 56-year-old man is charged with murder for allegedly killing his former girlfriend, a medical student who was found dead with multiple stab wounds in her boarding house last week.

Police Officer 3 Geoffrey Gutual of the Homicide Section of the Cebu City Police Office said a complaint of murder was filed yesterday against Wilfredo Velez alias Willy, a resident of Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City.

Velez remains at-large.

Investigation revealed that Velez was the last person who visited Amy Therese Cabataña in her boarding house on May 15.

Cabataña, 28, a native of Loay, Bohol, was a registered nurse and a medical student in one of the universities in Cebu City.

Cabataña was still wearing her white uniform when she was found dead inside her boarding house on V. Rama Ave., Barangay Guadalupe with multiple stab wounds to different parts of her body.

Gutual said at around 4:20 a.m. on the same date, Velez was seen getting off a taxicab and requested the driver to wait for him.

Velez allegedly left the boarding house at around 6:45 a.m. with a new shirt.

Lawyer Erika dela Cerna, legal counsel of the Cabataña family, said they welcome the filing of the complaint against Velez.

"Our law firm was retained as private prosecutors in the murder of Ms. Cabataña and we shall be assisting the family bring the culprit to the bar of justice and we shall not rest until his conviction. In the meantime we shall respect the decision of the family not to issue yet any statement to respect their bereavement," Dela Cerna said.  (FREEMAN)
