PHO: Stay hydrated

CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu Provincial Health Office (PHO) reminds the public to drink water frequently as the hot dry season, commonly known as summer, starts.

PHO - Public Health Division chief Dr. Sheila Faciol said that dehydration is one of the common reasons why people get sick during this season. Dehydration happens when one’s body is running low on water necessary to perform its functions. She continued that even if one does not feel thirsty, one should drink water throughout the day. Humans are advised to drink at least a liter of water daily.

Faciol explained that the PHO does not have exact figures on the number of dehydration cases since it often leads to other complications. Aside from dehydration, the other common summer woes are cough, colds, prickly heat, and sunburn due to overexposure under the heat of the sun.

The PHO also warned that dehydration and being overexposed to intense heat may lead to heat stroke. It is a condition marked by fever and often by unconsciousness, caused by the failure of the body's temperature-regulating mechanism when exposed to excessively high temperatures.

Meanwhile, PHO will commence its operation “tuli” or circumcision this summer in different towns. Children from 7 to 9 years old are encouraged to avail themselves of the free operation in their respective towns.

Interested parties may inquire with the nearest health center or provincial hospitals. —/FPL (FREEMAN)
