City readies buses for transport strike

Jean Marvette A. Demecillo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - To alleviate the impact of the transport strike on Monday, the Cebu City government will deploy at least 15 Kaohsiung buses in different areas of the city to transport the stranded passengers.

City Councilor David Tumulak, deputy mayor on peace and order, said the Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (PISTON) – Cebu has informed the city of the transport strike.

“Ni respeto ta sa atong mga drivers kay ilaha nang katungod ang pagwelga, apan dili makatarunganon nga isakripisyo ang atong mga pasahero,” he said.

Tumulak said the city will deploy buses in barangays that have several commuters and passengers such as in Labangon, Guadalupe, Bulacao, Talamban, Lahug, Mabolo, among others.

He said the deployment will start around 3 p.m. until the transport strike would end.

He said the city has also tapped Cebu City Police Office for the deployment of policemen in the streets to maintain peace and order.

“Awhag lang nato sa PISTON nga dili lang magpakasala sa atong balaod kay ato silang gitugotan nga mag-welga bisan og walay permit,” Tumulak said.

“Ang pagpauli sa mga pasahero ang pangandaman ani. Rest assured nga naay police ug malikayan nato ang ma stranded nga pasahero,” he added.

Tumulak said the city’s Command Control Center will work closely with the Cebu City Transportation Office personnel.

CCTO operations head Francisco Ouano, on the other hand, said his office will deploy several personnel to man the traffic.

As of now, Ouano said, there are no plans for road closures and public utility jeepney rerouting.

“Gi-inform na mi nga dunay transport strike karong Monday. Wala ta nakurat sa ilang strike kay katungod na nila. Ang ato-a lang is well-prepared na ta. Naa tay enforcers sa kadalanan nga mo feedback sila kung unsa sitwasyon sa dalan,” he said.

Ouano said CCTO is targeting the Mabolo area near the St. Joseph church where the drivers will converge.

“I think dili kaayo makamugna og kadaot (ang strike). Pero, just in case, ready lang atong mga sakyanan ug atong personnel para mo assist sa publiko,” he said. (FREEMAN)
