Woman dead, 6 others hurt in Santander bus accident

CEBU, Philippines - A woman died while six others were injured after the bus they were riding figured in an accident Friday in Barangay Talisay, Santander, Cebu.

The fatality was identified as Antonieta Alepar, 37, a resident of the same place, and one of the passengers of the ill-fated Vallacar Transit bus.

Investigation showed that the accident happened while bus driver William Ostia, 42, was exiting the garage around 1 p.m. on Friday with the bus loaded with passengers.

Ostia took a right turn when he allegedly miscalculated in maneuvering the bus and accidentally bumped into a tricycle parked nearby then into three eateries along the road.

Tricycle driver Mansueto Langayan, Jr. managed to jump out of the tricycle before impact and survived unscathed.

However, one of the passengers of the bus died after sustaining severe injuries.

Alepar died at around 7 p.m. on the same day at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City, said Police Officer 1 Dante Deniega of Santander Police Station.

The six others who were injured were bus passengers Edwin Bungcasan, 46, and Johnrel Hornada, 15, both residents of Talisay, Santander; Dominic Cordero, 29, Analie Abasolo, 27, Jenny Salimbot, 21, and Jay Abasolo, 21, all from Zamboanga City.

They are now in stable condition, according to the police.

Deniega said they are still waiting for the victims to appear before their station to determine whether they are suing the bus driver.

Ostia, a resident of Bogo City, is now detained at Santander Police Station.

Langayan and the owners of the eateries, on the other hand, are not planning to file a complaint against Ostia following a compromise agreement. (FREEMAN)
