August 30: Non-working holiday in Mandaue City

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Office of the President has granted the resolution of the Mandaue City Council requesting for the declaration of August 30 this year, the city's 47th Charter Day anniversary, a non-working holiday in the city.

Proclamation No. 40, which was signed last August 10 by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea by the authority of Pre-sident Rodrigo Duterte, declares August 30 as a special non-working holiday in Mandaue City.

"It is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Mandaue will be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies," the Proclamation read.

Since August 30 falls on Tuesday, the Mandauehanons will have a longer holiday because August 29, which falls on a Monday, is a regular holiday as it is National Heroes Day.

Mandaue City became a city on June 21, 1969 by virtue of Republic Act 5519.

But Presidential Proclamation 586 designated August 30, 1969 as the date of the formal organization of the city government.

To be fully prepared for the transition period from municipality to the status of cityhood, a subsequent Presidential Proclamation No. 586 was issued by then president Ferdinand Marcos through Executive Secretary Ernesto M. Maceda on August 6 of the same year.

It was in August 30, 1969 when the date was formally designated as the formal organization of the government of Mandaue City.

With Presidential Proclamation No. 586, Series of 1969 as legal basis, the resolution said the city and the residents of Mandaue will hold on to their tradition on celebrating the Charter Day anniversary on August 30.

The declaration of Malacañang was in response to the request of the City Council, through a resolution introduced by Councilor Ernie Manatad, requesting President Duterte to issue a proclamation declaring August 30, 2016 as a special non-working holiday in the city.  (FREEMAN)
