Detailed design for BRT Phase 1 presented today

CEBU, Philippines - The contractor of the P10.6 billion Cebu-Bus Rapid Transit is set to present to the Technical Working Group today the detailed engineering design of the project’s first phase.

Kunhwa Engineering & Consulting will show the detailed design for the said phase which covers the stretch of Osmeña Boulevard in Cebu City.

Once the TWG comes up with official feedback, the design can now be presented to Cebu City officials, said Cebu-BRT Office head Rafael Yap.

The TWG is composed of representatives from the Cebu City government, as well as from the Department of Transportation and Communications, Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, Land Transportation Office, among others.

Yap said the approval process for the engineering design is projected to be done by December.

He said once the first phase is given the green light, the procurement process will immediately commence January next year. This would mean the actual project implementation would start second or third quarter next year, he added.

The DED and procurement for construction services will last eight months while the actual project implementation will take at least two years to finish.

Yap said the project will be built by phases.

The first phase of the BRT project will involve detailed engineering design and preparation of bidding documents for the engineering, structural, civil, architectural, electrical and mechanical design.

The second phase, on the other hand, covers the supervision of the transit way and the supporting infrastructure during the construction.

The BRT project is seen to address the city’s worsening traffic conditions. Once in place, buses will traverse the city’s major thoroughfares such as N. Bacalso Avenue, Osmeña Boulevard, N. Escario Street and Governor Cuenco Avenue.

There will be at least 14 designated stations from Barangay Bulacao to Barangay Talamban.  (FREEMAN)
