Chinese businessman nabbed for selling fake products

CEBU, Philippines – A Chinese businessman was arrested Saturday afternoon by the operatives of the Cebu City Police Office for allegedly selling counterfeit motorcycle accessories.

Yidang Chen, 36, a native of Fujin, China, was caught in the act of selling fake MS motorcycle seat covers during a buy-bust operation in Barangay San Roque, Cebu City where he also operates RCL Motor Parts Trading.

Inspector Gomersendo Mandawe, deputy chief of the City Intelligence Branch, said the operation stemmed from a complaint filed by Iluminado Ornopia, owner of MS Motosuit.

Ornopia said that he is the registered owner of the MS brand of motorcycle seat covers which were allegedly copied by Chen. Mandawe said that after Ornopia was able to present pertinent documents to prove his ownership of the brand, a surveillance operation was immediately conducted against the Chinese businessman.

A buy-bust operation was conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday resulting to  the arrest of the suspect.

The police were able to seize 148 pieces of colored  seat covers and 150 plain motorcycle seat covers with prices ranging from P150 to P230.

Chen is selling the products at a very much cheaper price compared to the original, which are at P400 each. Chen will be facing charges for violation of the Republic Act 8293 or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.

Mandawe said a certification will also be asked from the Department of Trade and Industry to prove that Chen is not authorized to sell such products. —/FPL (FREEMAN)
