Consumers advised to buy meat from accredited shops

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Agriculture-7 has advised consumers to purchase meat products from shops and slaughterhouses accredited by the National Meat Inspection Service in order to avoid “hot” and “double-dead” meat.

Gerry Avila, Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division chief, said they are reiterating the warning with the holiday season just around the corner.

“We should have our consumers aware in buying meat aron malikayan ang makapalit og dubok na o makadaut na nga karne,” said Avila.

Meat is considered “hot” if not slaughtered in an approved facility or did not undergo or pass the required inspection by a qualified meat inspector.

“Double dead” meat, on the other hand, comes from an already dead animal before it is butchered and sold in the markets. These meats usually indicate red spots in the skin, pale, and are reddish in color.

Avila said deputized personnel from the local government units will inspect slaughtering houses in the province.

Moreover, DA Secretary Proceso Alcala has advised that aside from buying meat from registered meat shops, it is best for a consumer to look for an inspection certificate and marks of inspection that prove that the meat has indeed been inspected.

The DA recognized the important role the NMIS plays in ensuring the health and safety of meat products and also in safeguarding the trade of livestock products.

Because of the NMIS’ efforts in implementing the standards for animal slaughter, mandatory good manufacturing practices, hazard analysis and critical control point and humane handling of animals for slaughter, the country is able to export livestock products to several countries, said Alcala.  (FREEMAN)
