CEBU, Philippines - The damage caused by the dump truck that fell from the Marcelo Fernan Bridge Tuesday night was estimated at P774,000 according to Acting Governor Agnes Magpale.
Magpale who is also the acting chairman of the Mactan Cebu Bridge Management Board (MCBMB) ordered the assessment and truck owner, Barangay Captain Remegio Oyao of Agus, Lapu-Lapu City, will be billed for the damage.
Magpale said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will undertake the repair which is set to start today.
The dump truck was loaded with limestone and was on its way to Lapu-Lapu City from barangay Talamban in Cebu City when the incident happened.
The driver, identified as Fidel Lopez of Barangay Looc, lost control of the steering wheel when its cross bearings cracked, causing it to fall from the bridge and land in front of Mandaue City’s Livelihood Center.
As reported, there is also a scheduled partial closure of the two bridges linking mainland Cebu and Mactan island for repair anytime this week.
Asphalt overlay works will be done on the Marcelo Fernan Bridge and the first Mandaue-Mactan Bridge this week said the DPWH.
This is part of the P100 million worth of 12 infrastructure projects the National Government will be implementing in Mandaue City before March 29, the start of the election ban on infrastructure projects.
DPWH is set to brief MCBMB on Wednesday about the project and will recommend that the repair work on the two bridges will start on February 25. (FREEMAN)
