A phone with a “holographic screen”?

THE TECH CIRCUIT - Yasunari Ramon Suarez Taguchi - The Freeman

Word of a phone that comes with a “holographic screen” has recently come up – a smartdevice that’s purported to have the capacity to display standard media and what its manufacturer is calling “4-view content.”

Dubbed the “Hydrogen One,” folks over at high-end camera brand RED recently dished on the brand’s plans in rolling out a smartphone that can playback immersive content without the need for special viewing glasses or headsets.

The brand’s announcement on the smartdevice isn’t exactly clear about the specifications of the smatphone model in question, citing that the device will support virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality formats via advanced nanotechnology. The announcement, however, doesn’t elaborate much on this tech.

But it does note that the device will come with provisions to support external add-ons for better image/video capturing. This aspect of the device alludes to the electronic consumer segment it is aimed towards.

Reactions to the announcement have been mixed. A number are skeptical about the device’s supposed “holographic screen,” while others are convinced that RED may just have an industry game-changing device in the “Hydrogen One.” More information on the model is hosted on RED’s official online channels.

The world’s first 77-inch flexible and transparent OLED display

LG Display grabbed the world’s attention late last month in the unveiling of a 77-inch Ultra HD display that comes with flexible and transparent form features.

Unveiled in South Korea, the display panel sports a 3840 x 2160 screen resolution, with a 40 percent transparency rating and 80 radius of curvature. The display panel can be rolled up to a radius of 80mm without affecting its functions.

The display is LG’s most recent flexible screen technology milestone. It comes after the unveiling of an18-inch flexible display in 2014, and a 55-inch transparent OLED panel in 2016.

The application of flexible or bendable displays may not have yet taken the arena of consumer tech yet, but it has been the subject of various future-forward forecasts.

Most of these forecasts cover the possible application of a display panel that’s decked on top of a car’s dashboard, the use of bendable displays in room corners to maximize the use of living space, a bendable display’s beneficial use in the areas of medical research and healthcare, among many others.

A prepaid SIM intended for visitors to Japan

Here’s an interesting bit of news for Cebuanos with plans to visit Japan: One of the country’s leading telcos recently had the launch of a new prepaid service intended for tourists.

The prepaid service comes in three 15-day plan offerings which can be reloaded should there be a need to do so. Essentially, the offering provides Japan-bound tourists with a hassle-free option for access to the NTT DOCOMO network before traveling to the country.

Named “Japan Welcome SIM,” applications for the service can be done through a dedicated website. Japan-bound travelers can sign up for the service prior to their trip, and can get their prepaid SIMs in locations like the Narita, Haneda or Kansai International airports.

Reactions on the prepaid service have generally been favorable, with some people expressing opinions that a similar service here in the Philippines could have beneficial impact in the country’s tourism sector. More information on the service is hosted on DOCOMO’s official online channels.
