CEBU, Philippines - As the Cebuanos' lifestyle becomes a blur of schedules and paperwork, it is a struggle to take time off and attend to one's health needs. Thankfully, running does not demand much time or expenses. The only problem is, where?
The website www.blogph.net lists down some great places located in or near the city where one can hit the ground running.
Cebu IT Park. The landscape and convenience of the IT Park makes it a runner's haven. With its oval like terrain and open area, health buffs are safe to exercise there. If, however, a runner bumps unto a minor crisis, convenient stores are open daily in just about every corner, for basic emergency needs may it be for a blistered foot or a growling stomach.
Cebu City Sports Complex. For a minimal fee of P15.00, joggers can enjoy the feeling of running in an Olympic event on a 400 meter rubber track. Located along Osmeña Boulevard, the facility offers a secure ground far from moving vehicles and street pickpockets. The establishment also provides a public lavatory where one can change after sweating out.
South Road Properties (SRP) Seawall. If a runner is tired of the skyscrapers, perhaps a trip to the SRP seawall is in order. While the place might lack the amenities that certain establishments provide, its captivating view of the sea and the sea breeze easily compensate the little lack of the place. The seawall pathway is only available between 4 to 8 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and open anytime on Sundays.
Cebu Business Park. Established on a 50-hectare land, the Cebu Business Park is not only an ideal place to do business but also burn cholesterol. The area strictly observes traffic and safety regulations which are helpful for both commuters and joggers. If sudden pangs of hunger, thirst or shopping urge hit a runner, Ayala Center Cebu is within the premises.
South Hills. For the runner who wants a more challenging terrain, South Hills offers just that. Situated on the hills of Tisa, Labangon, the subdivision caters to an athlete's hunger for tough slopes, fresh air and a panoramic view of the city. Stores are also plentiful in the area since Tisa is home to several establishments.
San Carlos Heights. From plains and hills, Cebu ups its level in jogging to the extremes. San Carlos Heights in Quiot, Pardo does not only have residences but also steep concrete trails which are both challenging and safe for runners as well. Joggers are advised to bring their own supplies since stores are scarce in the area.
Naga Baywalk. An hour's commute from the downtown area, Naga tucks runners away from the bustle of big city life to a simpler environment. The place not only offers a great view of the sea but an abundance of available food and drinks that joggers can enjoy. Sun protection is a must in the area during the day, for there are not that many shaded paths.
Family Park. The park is a one-stop-spot for everyone. Aside from having a great jogging trail, the nature park offers relaxation by its lake and fun in its mini zoo. It also provides a secure path for runners and their kids.
Fuente Osmena Circle. The famous city landmark that has graced postcards has been the traditional jogging venue long before the emergence of new jogging areas. Situated in the uptown area, Fuente Osmeña Circle is the center of everything one would ever need - jogger or not. There are food and drinks, good shades, nearby stores and medical centers.
Marcelo Fernan Bridge. Although it is one of the widest and longest bridges in the Philippines, the Marcelo Fernan Bridge makes it on the list of the shortest jogging trails in Cebu City with only 1.2 kilometers. Barriers are provided along the walk lanes, making it safe for both pedestrians and joggers. The joggers are always prized with a breathtaking view and the cool sea breeze atop the bridge.
Running does not only provide health benefits. It can really refresh the mind to be out in nice places. Fortunately, Cebu has a lot of such nice places to jog in. (FREEMAN)
