With Covid-19 cases once again on the rise, the scheduled reopening of cinemas have been deferred to April.

Affected by this development is the opening of the film “Dito at Doon” starring Janine Gutierrez and JC Santos that had been reset to April 21.

The breakout of the pandemic last year caused the cancellation of the 1st Summer Metro Manila Film Festival. There is no word yet from the MMDA and the MMFF Execom if the festival is pushing through this year.

“We haven’t had a meeting since after the MMFF last December. Everyone seems to be pre-occupied with our Covid responses since there is a surge of cases and new variants recently,” said MMFF spokesperson Noel Ferrer.

Also affected by the pandemic was Sinag Maynila Film Festival that was also cancelled last year although the entries had been announced. As of this writing, there is no word yet if Sinag will resume this year.

There is no statement from Brillante Mendoza and Mr. Wilson Tieng of Solar Films, the prime movers of Sinag Maynila.

Producers have a wait-and-see attitude since they are for the recommendation of IIATF if cinemas will be allowed to operate, with strict health protocols followed and a set percent capacity.

It is scary to go to the mall anew. We are not sure if people will be brave to go back watching in cinemas.

We cannot risk our health and well-being just because we want to watch a movie. There are other options available for us to enjoy movies. But we do miss the feeling of  watching inside a dark theatre.

Former Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Maxine Medina is playing a kontrabida for the first time in “First Yaya” and she admits having had second thoughts in accepting the offer of GMA Network.

“I was scared. I was thinking will I be credible as a kontrabda? Will I be able to play the role well?,” said Maxine during her solo Zoom presscon. “But my manager Jonas Gaffud advised me to accept the role for the experience.”

So Maxine grabbed the chance to play antagonist to Sanya Lopez who is playing the yaya in the new series that has Gabby Concepcion playing the president.

And she is slowly getting the hang of it.

“Nagugustuhan ko naman so far. Kaya ko rin naman palang maging maldita,” said Maxine with a laugh.

What adds excitement to her role is having to act with veteran Cebuana actress Ms. Pilar Pilapil, who like her, is also a maldita in “First Yaya.”

“She is a veteran actress and she is very good pero masarap siyang kaeksena kasi nagbibigay siya ng pointers how to attack my role,” she said.

She said viewers should watch out if she and Pilar will also get into conflict in future episodes.

She is also thrilled to be working with the handsome Gabby.

“I watched some of his old moviess especially those with Sharon Cuneta kaya masaya ang feeling na makatrabaho ko siya. Pero ayaw niyang magpatawag na Tito kasi dapat barkada lang kami sa set.”

“First Yaya” started airing Monday night.
