Was John Lloyd used to drumbeat ‘Culion’?

STAR CIRCUIT - Ricky L. Calderon - The Freeman

The feeling of excitement was definitely in the air at the media and trailer launch of the historical drama “Culion” held Monday night at the Bar One of the Holiday Inn Hotel Galleria.

The entire production team of “Culion” was in full force, headed by award-winning director Alvin Yapan, famed screenwriter Ricky Lee (who wrote the powerful script) and the controversial line-producer Mark Shandii Bacolod.

Not to be missed were the lead actresses Iza Calzado (who is also one of the producers), Jasmine Curtis-Smith, Suzette Ranillo, Mike Liwag, Joel Saracho, Aaron Concepcion, Rex Lantano, Lee O-Brien, and a lot more.

Joem Bascon arrived later and missed the official launch of the “Culion” trailer. He was caught up in traffic as he came from Bulacan where he was filming a movie with Lovi Poe, under the direction of Mac Alejandre.

It was a fabulous launch. Aside from the sumptuous food and drinks, there was even a raffle for the members of the media who were invited to the event. Also unveiled during the launch were the giant photos of the cast members of “Culion” which became an added attraction for the attendees.

But of the course, the highlight of the evening was the trailer. The audience watched in silence as the images photographed by Neil Daza were flashed on screen. They marveled at the acting of the stars and the crisp, meaningful lines delivered by each character. Making a big impact in the end was the image of John Lloyd Cruz who plays a special role in the film, as he is connected to the character portrayed by Meryl Soriano.

When we were in “Culion” in July, Shandii mentioned he was talking to John Lloyd on the possibility of doing a special part in the film. But at that time, nothing was definite yet although we learned last night that the actor shot his scenes on the day the members of the media invited to cover the “Culion” filming left for Manila.

Shandii first worked with Lloydie in the short film titled “Catharsis,” directed by Chad Vidanes, son of ABS-CBN executive Cory Vidanes.

The brief appearance of John Lloyd sent shockwaves to the audience. And they liked the trailer so much, citing the beautiful cinematography. But if there were those who like JDL’s image in the trailer’s end, there were those who reacted that John Lloyd “was used” in the film. He only has a special role in the film but he was “used” to drumbeat the trailer. Some people in social media even used the term “extra” (bit player) to describe JDL’s part in “Culion.”

So we decided to get Shandii’s reaction to the comments in social media. This was Shandii’s answer, en toto: “To be honest, special appearance siya sa movie. Technically, baka ‘extra’ nga lang po talaga. Mukha lang po siguro gamit na gamit because of the reaction of the people upon seeing him sa trailer – everyone is excited to see him again sa screen kaya na-hype. But as producer of the film, I have to take in whatever hype we get. Thankful po ako sa lahat.”

The revered Philippine School of Interior Design (PSID) has been mounting graduation exhibits since 1979 when it only had nine graduates. After 40 years of continuous growth and creative outbursts, the school’s status has reached cloud nine level.

Young visionary students building what are labeled as “homes using geometrically inspired spaces for alternative types of built places” have put their work on spotlight for this year’s milestone as their hard work and ingenuity will be featured in the exhibit to run for the whole of October on the fifth floor of Greenfield Tower in Mandaluyong City.

The exhibit, dubbed HUGIS ATBP and presented by the Advanced Class of 2019, will showcase 12 different design spaces under 30 square meters in three habitat styles all described innovative, ingenious, inspired, and globally adaptive. It is one boasting the concept of how design and functionality can co-exist in alternative spaces of varying shapes.

“It is important that we push our visionary students to keep them thinking outside the norms of design and exploring beyond the limits of traditional spaces,” said topnotch interior designer Victor Ruel Pambid, PSID Vice President for Academic Affairs.

From square to round to triangular architecture, local to sustainable materials, luxury to economy, these interior design students explore stylish solutions for compact yet comfortable living. HUGIS ATBP is actually an acronym that stands for that very description — Homes Using Geometrically Inspired Spaces for Alternative Types of Built Places. This one we didn’t see coming for that is the nature of these designs – bound to surprise.

HUGIS ATBP is divided into three galleries: Parisukat at Parihaba, Bilog, and Tatsulok. The exhibit will be opened daily from October 1 to 31, 8 am to 10 pm at the Greenfield Tower in Mandaluyong.
