Odette leaves P3.3 billion damage to Central Visayas tourism

CEBU, Philippines — The Department of Tourism (DOT-7) reported a partial tourism damage value of P3.3 billion covering the Central Visayas region. 

In a report collated by DOT-7 as of January 14, 2022, showed that the typhoon’s damage to tourism reached P3,377,244,257. Of the figure, Cebu’s assessment of damage initially reached P2,515,322,381 while Bohol (partial) stood at P433,239,250.

According to DOT-7 this figure could go higher in the coming days, as some

establishments in Negros, Tagbilaran and Panglao in Bohol and Siquijor still have to submit their reports.

As of January 19, 2022, Negros partially reported an estimated damage of  P428,682,626. Siquijor’s damage assessment is still ongoing.

According to the report, there were at least 500 enterprises and 2,367 workers to have been affected by the typhoon as of January 13.

Of the reported P3.3 billion worth of damages, Cebu accounted for P2.5 billion in damages due to the bigger properties that were destroyed by the typhoon, primarily the accommodation establishments at P2.47 billion, which are mostly located in Lapu-Lapu City.

Damages in English and Second Language (ESL) facilities initially pegged at P45,000. While the MICE (meeting, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) venues reported damages of at least P.5 million.

Scuba diving operators reported P18.3 million damages; P8.9 million for the restaurant sector; P4.8 million for the transport services; P9.9 million for tourists sites and at least P65,000 for travel agencies’ facilities.

Initial report from Lapu-Lapu City based establishments logged P1.97 billion, closely followed by P259 million from tourism related businesses located in Mandaue City. Tourism establishments operating in Cebu City reported P130 million worth of damages, while P23 million those that are based in Consolacion and P21 million in the town of Catmon.
