[Title] => Pray and the gods will heed
[Summary] => Due to popular public demand, Once on this Island is back to warm the hearts of young and old alike. Previously staged by Actor’s Actors Inc. (AAI), this critically-acclaimed run will feature a sophomore cast that includes singing sensation Bituin Escalante, Michael Williams and Menchu Lauchenco-Yulo (both fresh from playing lead roles in Repertory Philippines’ Man of La Mancha), and The Dawn’s legendary frontman Jett Pangan – as the mythical gods of the Island.

You have read about them, these sirens of the southern seas, in the novels of Joseph Conrad. You have met them in Nordhoff and Hall’s Bounty trilogy on Pitcairn Island.

It comes right before opening night, which is fierce enough, and when the artists are barely prepared, confident or secure in their roles. They perform during a dress/tech rehearsal in revolting stress and before an audience that can destroy their careers forever. So when I went to see Once on This Island on press night, I knew what the cast and crew were going through.

Once on This Island,
I was told, is an adaptation of The Little Mermaid. As I’m one of the thousands of little girls who warbled Disney’s Part of this World in swimming pools all over the world, I found myself looking forward to a happily-ever-after. I was halfway through the play when I realized that I was looking at an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen version, the infinitely more disturbing original about love and sacrifice.

Krish is a late addition to the cast of Once on This Island, the latest musical being mounted by our company, Actor’s Actors Inc.

She first flashed her smile and the room lit up, her jet black hair framing her large brown eyes when she sang for us. She eventually landed the pivotal role of Ti Moune, alternating with Born Diva champ Raki Vega.
