[Title] => Power restored at Makati jail
[Summary] => Power was restored late yesterday at the Makati City Jail (MCJ), which had to endure four days without electricity.

The jail facility’s electricity was cut off after the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) sent them a P613,000 bill, representing surcharges and interests incurred for unpaid obligations for years 2001, 2002, and 2003.

Jail Warden Superintendent Edgar Bolcio said power at the MCJ was cut off at 11:20 a.m. last Monday.

I find it rather unusual that six of its inmates had died one after the other in just a span of two weeks."

Senate Majority Leader Loren Legarda aired today this concern as she asked government officials to investigate the cause of the successive deaths at the city jail so that appropriate actions could be undertaken.

"Four of the six who died had complained of difficulty in breathing, leaving us to wonder what virus or bacteria must be menacing inmates today at the MCJ," Legarda said.

Sixth District Councilor Julio Logarta Jr. said "humane accommodations" include adequate food and water supply, open space for sun exposure, private rooms for lawyer and conjugal visits.
