                    [Title] => Becoming a person of value
                    [Summary] =>

There was a time when people were paid or rewarded according to the number of hours they’ve rendered in terms of service. In other words, people gave their time, by working using their skills, in exchange for money their employers would pay. This is why you get paid extra when you have to work beyond the required work hours.

In the early ’90s I frequented a video store in the basement of Makati Cinema Square called Video Take-Out. They had an impressive collection of classic and art movies on laser disc (Remember when we thought the laser disc was "It"? A year or so later it had gone the way of Atari). One day I rented Caravaggio directed by Derek Jarman. All I knew of Caravaggio was that he was an Italian painter, and all I knew of Jarman was that he was gay and British. John Ruskin, the English poet, once wrote, "You may either win your peace or buy it: win it, by resistance to evil; buy it, by compromise with evil." I think Ruskin would agree with the premise that you can only find peace one of two ways: either live in a castle or fortress that is so secure, so strong and so impenetrable that no one–not even God Himself–could ever come through, or make peace with your enemies.

The English poet, John Ruskin, once wrote, "You may either win your peace or buy it: Win it, by resistance to evil; buy it, by compromise with evil." I think Ruskin would agree with the premise that you can be at peace in only one of two ways. Either live in a castle or fortress that is so secure, strong and impenetrable that no one–even God Himself–could ever come within, or make peace with your enemies.

Few people have ever heard of Lilias Trotter, but it didn’t have to bet that way. A young art student in 19th-century England, Trotter had great talent as a painter. The well-known artist and professor John Ruskin recognized it, took her under his tutelage, and saw her ability blossom over a short time. In a letter he stated that she was "the best of my pupils". She was to become the next Ruskin protégé of renown.
