The Cebu City Government has recently discovered an idle fund with the Department of Energy (DOE) that has already accumulated to P32 million since 2000 and which could have been used to fund electrification, environmental and livelihood projects of the City Government.

The Department of Energy (DOE) has signed a memorandum of agreement with Lopez-controlled Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) for the full energization of all barangays within Meralco’s franchise areas this year.

In a report, covering the first quarter this year, the DOE said it approved the funding for electrification of 52 barangays in provinces that host power projects amounting to P50.4 million. The amount, will come from the Electrification Fund, which is sustained by contributions from energy developers and power producers.
