MANILA, Philippines — More than 200 fencers from different clubs nationwide will see action in first Canlas Fencing Inter-Club Challenge starting today at the SM City Centerpoint in Sta. Mesa, Manila.

This is the first time Canlas Fencing is staging such a big event in partnership with SM, which finds the sport not just entertaining but also provides an oportunity for Filipino athletes especially the young ones to shine in international competitions.

In the recent 31st Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam, the Philippine team captured a gold medal courtesy of Samantha Catantan in women’s individual foil, with three silvers and four bronze medals.

Amat Canlas, the national team coach and founder of the Canlas Fencing Club, is hoping to discover more talent by staging such tournaments.

The four-day event is backed by ALX Cargo Logistics Corp., Hello Glow by Ever Bilena, San Miguel Corp., Converge, Uno Fuel, Milo, Pocari Sweat and Stanley Phils.
