Padiz top rookie in UAAP badminton

MANILA, Philippines — Upcoming Solomon “Monchie” Padiz Jr. of National University bagged his first major collegiate award as “Rookie of the Year” in the just-concluded UAAP Season 82 badminton championship at the PNP Sports Center, Camp Crame in Quezon City.

The 18-year-old Sports Education freshman smashed his way to the coveted award by winning 13 straight matches in sterling fashion in Team Tie  preliminary round – seven wins in men’s singles and six in  men’s doubles.

The 2018 PNG Open badminton gold medalist handily outsmarted veteran rival Keoni Asuncion of Ateneo via straight sets, 21-9,21-14, that was pivotal for the NU Bulldogs’ title retention drive in the UAAP.

“Thank God for everything, for giving me this new breakthrough,” said Padiz.

“This award inspires me more in my quest for glory in the coming SEA Games,” he added.
