Lady Eagles overcome miscues, halt Bulldogs

MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo tripped on a maze of errors in the opening set but found its rhythm against National University, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-17, to storm to its sixth straight win and remain at the summit in the UAAP season 81 women’s volleyball yesterday.

Bea de Leon fueled the Lady Eagles’ strong 10-3 finish in the fourth set, punching the air and letting out roars as she scored quick kills before Deanna Wong sealed it on a deft dump following sorry back-to-back miscues by the Lady Bulldogs.

Maddie Madayag led the way with 17 points built on 10 attacks, four service aces and three blocks, De Leon put in 13 points anchored on four blocks while Ponggay Gaston and Kat Tolentino scored 10 each for ADMU.

In a rematch of last year’s finalists, La Salle reigned supreme over Far Eastern U anew but had to survive a tough challenge in the third set to complete a 25-15, 25-19, 26-24 sweep.
