Frayna settles for draw; Gonzales, Miciano gain

MANILA, Philippines — Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna drew with Spain’s Albert Segarra Calderer and dropped behind the big group of early leaders after two rounds of the XX Obert Internacional Sant Marti 2018 in Barcelona, Spain Saturday night.

GM Jayson Gonzales and International Master John Marvin Miciano defeated Indian Shrivatri Anuj and Andreas Persson of Sweden, respectively, to join 20 others in the lead with two points.

Half-a-point adrift is another big cast of 1.5 points, led by 22-year-old Frayna, who opened her campaign with a victory over Gustavo Magallenes of Argentina.

Frayna, out to make up for her 51st place finish in Barbera del Valles last week, was playing India’s Atul Dahali at press time.

Frayna, currently rated 2315, is on her second of a six-tournament, 51-day European campaign with an eye of gaining GM norms or outright title. She also aims to breach the 2500-rating level for a crack at the women’s top 10 world rankings.

Gonzales and Miciano, on the other hand, were playing Cuban GM Yasser Quesada Perez and Spanish FIDE Master Bernat Serarols Mabras.
