Eagles dominant so far in Filoil cagefest

MANILA, Philippines — With a perfect 11-0 record and a chance to win their second Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup, things are looking good for the Ateneo De Manila Blue Eagles.

Making it sweeter is the fact that three Eagles have been named to the Mythical Five of the seniors division.

Center Angelo Kouame, forward Thirdy Ravena and point guard Matt Nieto were among the seniors’ five best players. Also joining them in the selection are De La Salle’s Justine Baltazar and San Beda’s Jayvee Mocon.

Ravena and Nieto along with Mocon are with the Gilas Cadets.

Kouame, a first-year player for Ateneo, averaged 12.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 1.7 assists for a total of 531 statistical points.

Baltazar, a junior cager for La Salle, chalked up 13.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks for a total of 462 statistical points.

Ravena normed 10.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.7 assists for a total of 402 statistical points.

San Beda’s Mocon put up 13.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists for a total 427 statistical points.

Lastly, Nieto scored 8.4 points and averaged 2.5 assists for 320 statistical points.

The Seniors Defensive Player Award went to Perpetual Help’s Prince Eze who put up 16.3 rebounds, 2.4 blocks, and 0.9 steals per game.

The Blue Eagles currently sport an 11-0 record and will shoot for the school’s second Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup title when they play defending champions San Beda later in the day, Saturday, June 30.

In the Juniors Division Mapua’s Brieden Smith and Clint Escamis, San Beda’s Rhayyan Amsali, La Salle Greenhills’ Inand Fornillos, and FEU-FERN’s Royce Alforque were named to the Mythical Five.

The Most Valuable Player will be awarded to the respective champion teams.
