Junior Altas take NC volley opener versus Staglets

Ryuji Etorma (8)  of defending champion Junior Altas prepares to hit a  toss of teammate EJ Casana during their game against the  San Sebastian Staglets in the NCAA Junior Volleyball tournament yesterday at the Fil Oil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

MANILA, Philippines - Perpetual Help trounced San Sebastian, 25-17, 25-14, 20-25, 25-16, yesterday to jumpstart its title bid in the high school division of the 91st NCAA volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Darwin John Salopaso fired 12 hits while Ryuji Conrad Etorma and Kirth Patrick Rosos scattered 11 apiece to help power the Junior Altas to their first victory of the season.

Team captain Jody Margaux Severo added nine but he was the glue guy that kept the Las Piñas-based squad together.

“It’s not the start we wanted but we’ll take it,” said Perpetual Help coach Sandy Rieta.

The Junior Altas, who downed the Lyceum of the Philippines U Junior Pirates, 25-15, 25-23, 25-19, to seal last year’s juniors championship, are gunning for a title repeat this year.

Unlike last year, Rieta said they want to have a strong start.

“Last year, we really struggled at the start of the season. Hopefully, we’ll have a better start this year,” said Rieta.
