NEW YORK — The Kansas City Royals won their first World Series crown since 1985, capitalizing on a critical mistake to tie the game in the ninth inning and then breaking away in the 12th to beat the New York Mets 7-2 in Game 5 on Sunday (Monday in Manila).
The Royals capped their postseason full of comebacks in fitting style and made up for last year's near-miss in a Game 7 loss to San Francisco.
The Mets led 2-0 going into the ninth inning but gave up two runs, the second when New York first baseman Lucas Duda misdirected his throw to home plate that should have been the final out.
In the 12th, Christian Colon delivered a tiebreaking single and Lorenzo Cain added a three-run double.
