Pirates handcuff undermanned Generals

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -- Lyceum of the Philippines University relied on the bullstrong Cameroonian Jean Victor Nguidjol as it turned back an undermanned Emilio Aguinaldo College, 59-45, to improve to 4-12 (win-loss).

The 6-9 Nguidjol, whose playing with a blinded left eye, powered his way to 16 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks to carry the Pirates to victory.

"I'm proud of his gradual improvement," said Lyceum coach Topex Robinson of the 20-year-old Nguidjol.

EAC came into the game already depleted with several players suspended for their involvement in an off-court brawl in its last game.

And they lost another player in Jefferson Mallari, who tossed out for headlocking Ngudjol late in the first half.

It didn't help that EAC is already playing minus Jorem Morada and Adoum Abba Mbang, the former suspended by the team and the latter went home to Cameroon as early as the first round.

Worst, its other African import, Cameroonian Laminou Hamadou fouled out with about two minutes to go, leaving the Generals with seven players.

In juniors' action, Lyceum edged EAC in overtime, 95-90, and St. Benilde routed San Sebastian, 87-57, to jump into a share of fourth with 10-6 records.
