Joson named AFC match commissioner

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has officially named Philippine Football Federation (PFF) marketing and communications head Richard “Ebong” Joson as one of the new AFC match commissioners.

Joson passed a series of written, practical, oral and computer exams and attended comprehensive workshops and seminars conducted for candidates early this month in Kuala Lumpur to become eligible to oversee AFC-sanctioned tournaments such as Challenge Cup and Asian Cup, and international friendlies.

He became the sixth Filipino match commissioner in the active roster of AFC, joining Philippine Football Federation general-secretary Ed Gastanes, Dave Penano, Cathy Rivilla, Miguel Davis and Cristy Ramos.

“This speaks of how far we have moved forward as a footballing nation and as a member association of the AFC and Fifa (International Football Federation),” he said.

He was among 142 participants in AFC Match Commissioners seminar that tackled media, legal and disciplinary matters, referees, marketing, equipment and TV broadcasting, among others.

“The AFC Match Commissioner represents AFC and is in charge of the efficient and effective running and organization of AFC football matches and tournaments under the guidelines set by the AFC,” said Joson, who was endorsed by PFF president Nonong Araneta and Gastanes for the post.

The MC assumes an organizational and administrative role, handling matters like delegations’ player registrations, meals and accommodations, internal transport, practice, stadium facilities, security, medical, communications, media and other matters.

“An MC’s checklist and responsibility essentially covers everything that is needed for the smooth running of a given football match,” Joson said.

The AFC has underscored the importance of match commissioners in the ever-busy Asian football scene.
