CEU, RTU clash in WNCAA opener

MANILA, Philippines - The 44th Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) unfolds today with Centro Escolar University kicking off its title-retention bid against last year’s runner-up Rizal Technological University at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

The CEU Scorpions swept the RTU Blue Thunder in their best-of-three duel last year with the former also bagging the seniors’ championships in volleyball, taekwondo and cheerleading to capture the overall championship.

The Scorpions and the Blue Thunder collide at 12 noon after the 10 a.m. opening rites to be led by host University of Asia and the Pacific.  

Other opening-day matches will pit Philippine Women’s University against Miriam College at 1:30 p.m. and St. Paul College Pasig versus La Salle College Antipolo in the lone juniors tussle at 3 p.m.

UA&P will not see action today to allow some of its players to rest after a bout with dengue fever.

Volleyball action begins tomorrow at RTU gym with Miriam, runner-up to CEU last season, taking on Assumption College at 11 a.m., the first of four seniors matches.

Futsal starts on Aug. 25 while badminton, swimming, table tennis, tennis, taekwondo and new event softball commence next year.

Other members of the country’s first and only tri-level league for women backed by Cafe Lupe Antipolo, OneA Family KTV and Sports Bar, Jeunesse, Molten, Mikasa, Goody, MJP Printing Press, Monster Radio RX 93.1, Alpha Insurance and Surety Company and School Bus clothing are Angelicum, Chiang Kai Shek, 43rd season overall midgets champion De La Salle Zobel, La Consolacion Manila, San Beda Alabang, St. Jude Catholic School, Poveda, St. Scholastica’s College and St. Stephen’s High School.
