V-League camp draws huge field

MANILA, Philippines - The Shakey’s V-League outreach volleyball camp at the Blue Eagle gym last weekend proved to be a huge success with over 500 participants showing up for the one-day session conducted by some of the country’s leading players.

In fact, the organizers had to accommodate a bigger number of participants in the two-batch camp, originally for 32-camper cast each in the morning and afternoon sessions.

“We had to make it 60 campers per session to accommodate the big number of participants. And we had to hold a meet-and-greet with the V-League players for about 400 more students,” said Eleanor dela Peña of the organizing Sports Vision.

Those who failed to join the camp, however, will be given free entrance when the league kicks off its 10th season on April 7 at The Arena in San Juan City.

Alyssa Valdez, Fille Cainglet and Jem Ferrer of Ateneo along with Sue Roces, Pau Soriano, Joy Benito, Angelique Dionela, Angela Benting and Rubie de Leon shared their expertise in the two-session clinic, where they taught the campers the basic skills training, including digging, setting, spiking and serving.

The camp, headed by Ateneo mentor Roger Gorayeb, was part of Shakey’s V-League advocacy to develop the sport.
