RTU, three others sweep WNCAA elims

MANILA, Philippines -  Rizal Technological University, Miriam College, Centro Escolar University and host De La Salle Zobel beat their respective rivals to sweep the elims and advance to the quarterfinals of the 43d WNCAA tournament over the weekend.

RTU downed Emilio Aguinaldo College, 65-41, to close out with a 4-0 mark in Senior A at the RTU gym in Mandaluyong. EAC and St. Scholastica’s College also advanced to the quarters.

In Senior B, defending champion CEU dumped Miriam, 73-25, for a similar 4-0 slate and towed Philippine Women’s University and San Beda College Alabang to the next round.

University of Asia and the Pacific will meet Assumption College while Miriam will tangle with La Consolacion College Manila with the winners clinching the last two quarters berths this weekend.

In volleyball at the St. Scholastica Manila gym, Miriam completed a 4-0 sweep in Senior B after dominating EAC, 25-7, 25-4, 25-16, while San Beda took the No. 2 slot with a 25-14, 18-25, 25-21, 25-23 victory over PWU, which ended up in third spot.

In Senior A, CEU wound up No. 1 with a 4-0 record while St. Scholastica settled for No. 2 after beating La Consolacion, 25-15, 25-21, 25-15. Defending champion RTU will take the No. 3 slot in the event backed by Goody, Mikasa, Molten, MJC Photography, network partner AKTV and radio partner Monster Radio RX 93.1.   

UA&P takes on EAC while La Consolacion battles Assumption also this weekend for the last two quarters slots.

DLSZ, the defending champion, likewise swept the five-game Junior B group in basketball, capped by a 64-11 rout of PWU. Its midgets team also swept the elims and gained the twice-to-beat advantage against Miriam for the championship.  

Miriam topped Junior A with a 4-0 slate and will gun for a sweep against St. Stephen’s High School on Saturday.  

DLSZ also continued to stamp its class in junior volleyball, finishing on top of Junior B at 5-0. Miriam and St. Paul College Pasig will join the Alabang-based squad in the quarterfinals. San Beda also moved closer to the next round as it defeated Assumption, 25-15, 26-16, 25-18.  

The Red Lions midgets team also paces the midgets division after beating DLSZ, 25-16, 25-15, for its fifth straight victory.
