Brunei keeps Asean Srs lead; Phl shares 3rd spot

MANILA, Philippines - Brunei sputtered with a 237 but stayed four shots ahead of Malaysia in the second round of the 28th ASEAN Seniors Golf Championships at Korea Country Club at Fontana Leisure Park in Clark, Pampanga Tuesday.

Alfred Sim, who shot a 69 in Malaysia’s solid 219 output in the first round, stumbled with a 77, Haji Brahim Hj Jumahat made a 79 and either the 81 from Haji Suot Hj Moksin and Dato Haji Idris Hj Belaman counted for the team’s 237 and a 36-hole total of 456.

Hamdan Zambahari fired a one-under 71, Datuk AS Khamis had an 80 while either Goh Chan Tau and MK Azmey’s 83 made it to Malaysia’s 234 score for a 460.

Thailand turned in the day’s best of 233 for a 464 as it gained a share of third with the Philippines, tied with Malaysia at the start of the round, which fumbled with a 238.

Jose Mari Hechanova scored a 76 while Pepot Iñigo carded a 77 and either Rudy Amata or Tony Olives’ 85 counted for the hosts.

Indonesia stood too far behind at 483 after a 242 while Singapore had a 258 for a 499 heading into the final round of the 54-hole tournament, a four-to-play, three-to-count format gross score team category event.

Sim also kept the lead in the individual gross competition, assembling a 146 for a one-shot lead over Zambahari, who had a 147 and four ahead of Filipino Dante Tejada, who had a 150, and five clear of Hechanova.

Meanwhile, Team Phl pulled away in the Zakir Challenge Trophy, played under the aggregate stroke play net, as it assembled a 195 for a 385 from Ben Liclican’s 64, Domingo Manuel’ 65 and Tejada’s 66.

Singapore moved up to joint second with Indonesia at 401 after a 206 as Leong Kong Yon, Tan Chwee Lee and Peh Choon Seng scored a 66, 69 and 71, respectively.

Indonesia drew a 66 from Mansyur Tampubolon, a 70 from Iskardar Sanjono and a 76 from Haposan Silalahi as it slowed down with a 212.
