Champs League unfolds today

Manila, Philippines - The first Champions League in Asia gets going today at the Ann Arbour Montessori School grounds on El Grande Ave., BF Homes, Parañaque City with the competing teams composed of 35 special children.

School officials, headed by their president Dr. Lourdes Carpio, together with Champions League Asia Pacific director and Philippine PONY president Rod Tingzon will grace the opener of the event.

The Champions League, the newest member of the PONY Baseball/Softball International family, was unanimously adopted at the International Board of Directors meeting on Oct. 13, 2009. It is designed to provide specifically for children regardless of special needs the opportunity to participate in baseball and softball competitions.

It is also held to enhance the participants’ self-esteem, physical mobility and embodies the spirit of teamwork.

The inaugural Champions game was played at the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. Members of the Champions League also played at the America’s Center, which hosted Fanfest. Hall of Famer, Tony Gwynn, greeted the players as they took the field. The contest resulted in a tie score, as do all Champions League games.

Tingzon, meanwhile, cited Ann Arbor Montessori for hosting the inaugural event.
