MANILA, Philippines - Four-time national superbike champion Maico Greg Buncio died yesterday due to massive injuries suffered in a crash during time trials at the Clark Speedway Racing Circuit Saturday afternoon.
Buncio expired at the UST hospital at 3:57 p.m. despite efforts of doctors to save his life. The motorcycle racing star died at 22.
He was running at an estimate speed of 220 kph when he figured in a freak accident and sustained serious injuries.
“So young to win so many championships, yet so young to reach his final lap,” the Philippine motorsports group said in a statement.
Philippine motorsports mourned the loss of Buncio who had contributed to the development of local racing, providing inspiration to a lot of young potentials to get into sports.
Buncio brought back excitement and interest to superbike racing when he wrested the title from 10-time champion Jolet Jao.
He was chasing a fifth consecutive crown when he met the accident.
Upon learning of Buncio’s death, organizers discontinued races at the Clark International Speedway as participants and motorsports enthusiasts offered a minute of silence for the eternal repose of his soul.
Buncio was among the top Filipino motorsports personalities, being named the Driver of the Year in March by the Golden Wheel Awards for his achievements which include championship trophies from the FBO Motocross Series in Tagaytay, the FMF Memorial Day Motorcross Races in California, and in various competitions at the Batangas Racing Circuit.
In April, Buncio was chosen by Team Suzuki Pilipinas to be among the country’s representatives in the 2011 Asian Road Racing Championship where he was supposed to use a Suzuki GSXR 600cc bike in the SuperSports 600cc category.
