Giligan's, Lions Alabang 2 rule Alabang Football Cup

MANILA, Philippines - Giligan’s and Lions Alabang 2 shared the limelight after ruling the men’s and women’s Open divisions of the first Alabang Country Club Football Cup that drew over 100 teams at the ACC pitch in Muntinlupa City last weekend.

Striker Luis Meer struck for two goals, boosting the charges of Giligan’s team owner Filbert Alquiros to a rousing 2-0 win over fancied Navy in the men’s Division 1 finals.

But Meer’s teammate, goalkeeper Martin Villamor, captured Most Valuable Player honors for not conceding a single goal in the tournament sponsored by Yellow Cab Pizza, Brothers Burgers, Aronamin Gold Vitamins Turf Company and Gatorade.

Lions Alabang 2, steered by eventual MVP Fiona McKenzie, shut out Smuch FC, 2-0, in copping the Women’s Open crown of the two-day soccerfest organized by the Muntinlupa, Parañaque and Las Piñas Football Association (MPLFA).

MPLFA president and tournament director Cathy Rivilla thanked ACC club manager Bones Floro for making the ACC grounds available for the inaugural edition of the ACC Cup that even attracted teams from as far as Masbate, Cagayan, Rizal, Laguna and Tarlac.

“We would like to thanks Bones Floro for making the ACC football grounds available even as we promise to do better in the next staging of the ACC Football Cup,” Rivilla said. “A Davao side wants to join our forthcoming tournament.”

In men’s division 2, United South FC topped Brookside, 3-1, while Tiu FC nosed out Squatters United, 2-1 in bagging the division 3 championship.

Alabang United copped the 6-under mixed division title with Migo Banzon emerging as MVP.

The other winners were Don Bosco Technical Institute, 8-under mixed division (MVP Miguel Basmayor), Schwarz FC the 10-U mixed division (MVP Marvin Santos), PAREF Southridge, 12-U boys (MVP Josh Miller); Alabang United, 12-U girls (MVP Alice Robang), Altas A, 14-U boys (MVP Alec Solana); Quezon City HS, 17-U girls; and PAREF Southridge, 17-U boys (MVP Jigs Cruz).
