Rivero leads taekwondo’s golden quest

-

NAKHON RATCHASIMA – Beijing Olympics-bound Mary Antoinette Rivero leads six RP bets plunging into action today at the start of the SEA Games taekwondo competitions where the Philippines has been assured of at least three bronze medals with the luck of the draw.

Veronica Domingo (under-63 kg), Maria Criselda Roxas (under-72kg) and Alex Briones (under-84kg) were drawn outright into the semis.

Rivero, Roxas and Briones together with Katherine Ann Bunyi (over-72kg) and Ernesto Juan Mendoza (under-78kg) are booked to fight in the first day of taekwondo wars where Team Philippines is expected to have its share of medals.

Another Olympic-bound Filipino jin, Tshomlee Go, is also here, vying for the gold in his event tomorrow.

Rivero, who made her golden debut in the regional sports showcase at 14 in the 2003 Vietnam Games, opens her quest here against Myanmar’s Ywet Wh.

Not even the slight pain in her right leg she sustained en route to booking an Olympic slot in the Asian qualifiers held in Ho Chi Minh last November could dampen her spirit.

“My right leg hurts slightly. Other than that I’m okay,” said Rivero, who flew in here with the rest of the taekwondo squad on Monday. – Nelson Beltran
