Malaysian rips SEAG mark

• A day after Filipino Arniel Ferrera broke the hammer throw record, Malaysian Siti Shahida Abdulliah came through with a 53.35m throw to bag the gold medal in the distaff side of the sport in a new SEAG record. Abdulliah’s feat shattered the 49.84m mark set by Benchamas Winatho in the 2001 Kuala Lumpur Games.

• Ferrera the other day ruled the men’s hammer throw event in record fashion, heaving a 60.47m feat to bag to the gold and erase the previous SEAG mark of 58.80m by Malaysian strongman Wong Tee Kue in the 1993 Games in Singapore.

• Henry Dagmil established a new SEAG mark in long jump as he leapt to 7.81m, shattering the 7.79m jump recorded by Mohd Zaki Sadri of Malaysia in the Jakarta Games in 1989.

• Gretchen Malalad won her third consecutive gold medal in karatedo, emerging as the first-ever Filipino athlete to establish such honor in the sport since 1977. Malalad also won in the 2001 Malaysia and 2003 Vietnam SEAG.

• Thailand’s Bouban Pamang established a new mark in javelin with a 55.06m throw yesterday, bringing to three the number records that have so far shattered in the centerpiece athletics event of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games.

• Pamang went on to win the gold. Rosie Villarito of the Philippines settled for silver with 49.43m while Singaporean Zhang Guiron took the bronze with 48.70. — Corrs Ebora and Carla Timpog
