Negros Occ. Environment head resigns

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines  — Maria Aleta Nuñez has resigned as head of the Provincial Environment Management Office (PEMO) effective June 30, provincial administrator Enrique Pinongan said yesterday.

Nuñez, who had been PEMO head since February 2010, said she resigned for “greener pasture,” Pinongan added, that Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. could not make Nuñez stay as the offer for her was very lucrative.

Nuñez has extensive linkages abroad through her works as an environment lawyer, and the offer for her is something she could not resist, Pinongan said.

He said the application of Nuñez with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has been approved, and her new job is national in scope with international exposure.

The governor is still looking for her replacement, which will be done through a selection process, Pinongan said.

The next PEMO head need not be an environmental lawyer, but that he or she shall have extensive environmental exposures, he said.

Nuñez was very active with the group of environment lawyer Antonio Oposa, in protecting the Visayan sea, among other endeavors, Pinongan added.
