MANILA, Philippines — Humingi ng paumanhin ang Office of the President ng Ateneo De Manila University sa pag-iimbita kay Irene Marcos, anak ng yumaong diktador na si Ferdinand Marcos, sa outdoor art installation program ng Areté nitong Linggo.
Sa statement na pinetsahang ika-10 ng Abril, sinabi ni Ateneo President Jose Ramon Villarin SJ na umaasa silang matututo sila sa pagkakamali.
"The University recognizes that her presence, even in a personal capacity, has cast doubts regarding its solidarity with the victims of the Martial Law regime. We offer our deepest apologies for the hurt this has brought," sabi ni Villarin sa statement.

Ika-7 daw ng Abril nang personal na imbitahan ng Executive Director ng Areté si Marcos para sa pagtitipon.
"The unintended consequences of this incident do not mean that the University has turned a blind eye to the atrocities committed during the Martial Law regime," dagdag ni Villarin.
Umani ng batikos mula sa konseho ng mag-aaral ng Ateneo at Kabataan party-list Katipunan chapter ang nangyari.
"Arete's invitation of a Marcos appears as a form of shameless compliance to the very movement that the Ateneo vehemently opposes, the erasure of Martial Law crimes from history and from the present discourse during the campaign period of the 2019 Senatorial Elections," sabi ng Sanggunian ng mga Paaralang Loyola ng Ateneo de Manila.
Aniya, "matinding insulto" at "pang-aasar" daw ito sa mga martir at buhay na biktima ng batas militar.
Matatandaang dinaluhan ng mga estudyante ng Ateneo ang protesta laban sa paglilibing sa dating pangulo sa Libingan ng mga Bayani.
"The Marcoses simply wish that the Filipino People move on. To that we dare say, never—not while Filipino patriots walk the halls of our universities, not while our student activists continue to fight, not until justice has been delivered. The Ateneo and her children will never forget."
Executive director nag-resign
Sa gitna ng kontrobersiya, nagbitiw sa pwesto si Yael Buencamino, executive director ng Areté.
Agad naman daw itong tinanggap ni Villarin, habang kinikilala ang kanyang ambag sa pagpapatakbo ng nasabing espasyo ng sining.
"I call on the University community to hold fast to our commitment to justice and peace, and to help one another remain vigilant, especially during this time of forgetfulness," panapos ni Villarin.
Tinutukoy niya ang diumano'y "historical revisionism" na ipinalalaganap sa ngayon para pagtakpan ang makasaysayang paglabag sa karapatang pantao noong batas militar.
Kasalukuyang tumatakbo sa pagkasenador ang nakatatandang kapatid ni Irene na si Imee, habang nahatulan ng guilty sa kasong graft ang ina nilang si dating First Lady Imelda Marcos kaugnay ng nakaw na yaman.
Kasama si Imee sa mga ine-endorsong kandidato ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte.
Danyos sa mga biktima
Nakatakdang makatanggap ng $1,500 kada tao ang libu-libong biktima ng Martial Law simula susunod na buwan matapos katigan ng federal judge sa New York ang settlement agreement na maghahati sa $20 milyong "ill-gotten assets" ng mga Marcos na nakuha mula sa Estados Unidos.
Mula sa naunang 10,000 orihinal na miyembro ng class suit, sinasabing 6,500 na lang ang "eligible" na makatanggap nito.
Gayunpaman, tumanggi naman daw ang Office of the Solicitor General sa kasunduan, at tinawag itong "grossly disadvantageous" sa gobyerno.
Sa kabila nito, payag naman daw ang Malacañang na mabigyan ng danyos perwisyos ang mga biktima bilang kapalit ng kanilang paghihirap.
"I’m sure there must have been victims during critical times. There will certainly be abuses committed in whatever regime that the governor or the president would not know about," sabi ni presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo sa isang press briefing.
"And just the same, if there are victims of violation of human rights, certainly they should be compensated," dagdag niya.
Nanindigan naman si Panelo na hindi dapat bigyan ng kompensasyon ang mga "kaaway ng gobyerno," dahil hindi raw matatawag na biktima ang mga pumapatay ng sundalo ng pamahalaan.
"Those caught in the crossfire can be considered victims."
