MANILA, Philippines — Hindi dadalo sa kaniyang impeachment hearing si Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno sa Kamara ngunit magpapadala ng abogado na kakatawan sa kaniya.
Nagpadala ng liham ang kampo ni Sereno sa Justice committee kung saan sinabi niyang ang mga abogado niya ang dadalo sa pagdinig bukas.
Kabilang sa mga kakatawan para sa Chief Justice ay sina Alexander Poblador, Dino Vivencio Tamayo, Anzen Dy, Justin Christopher Mendoza, Carla Pingul, Sandra Mae Magalang, Jayson Aguilar, Oswald Imbat, Enrico Edmundo Castelo II, Charles Richard Avila Jr. at Patricia Geraldez.
“The chief justice need not repeat her position as stated in the motion of her counsel that in the impeachment proceeding before the honorable committee, she has the right to appear through counsel and a denial thereof is a violation of due process,” nakasaad sa liham na ipinadala kay justice committee chair Rep. Reynaldo Umali.
Makakaharap ng mga abogado ni Sereno ang mga tumestigo laban sa kaniya.
Nag-ugat ang impeachment sa reklamo ng abogadong si Larry Gadon kung saan hahatulan bukas ng komite kung dapat ba itong ipagpatuloy.
Kontra naman dito si House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez na nagsabing hindi niya hahayaan na dumalo para kay Sereno ang mga abogado.
“I will not allow her lawyers to appear at the committee hearing. They have no business there. They’re not the ones being impeached. If Sereno were there, then they can accompany her,” sabi ni Alvarez.
Nanindigan naman si Sereno na hindi siya magbibitiw sa kabila ng panawagan laban sa kaniya.
