Watanabe, Knott pasok na rin pero...

MANILA, Philippines — Umabot na sa 15 ang mga Pinoy qualifiers sa Tokyo Olympics sa susunod na buwan nang opisyal na ring gawaran sina Fil-Japanese judoka Kiyomi Watanabe at Fil-American trackster Kristina Knott ng Olympic slots.

Subalit sa araw ng kanyang Olympic confirmation kahapon ay nagpositibo si Knott sa coronavirus disease (COVID-19) kahit nakakumpleto na siya ng bakuna sa United States.

“Kristina contracted COVID and she was tested positive yesterday hours before her second to the last competition,” ani PATAFA president Philip Ella Juico.

“She had no symptoms. She is fully-vaccinated,” sabi naman ni Rhosaan Griffin, ang coach ni Knott. Sa kabila nito ay naniniwala si Juico na may sapat na panahon pa si Knott para makapag-ensayo at makabalik sa dati niyang kondisyon sa pagsabak sa 2021 Tokyo Olympics na nakatakda sa Hulyo 23 hanggang Agosto 8.

Nakapasok naman ang 24-anyos na si Watanabe sa Tokyo Olympics via continental quota sa women’s -63 kilogram division base sa final at official qualification list na inilabas ng International Judo Federation (IJF). Pumuwesto ang four-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist sa No. 41 mula sa kanyang itinalang 1,506 points.

Nakasama ang pa-ngalan ni Watanabe, ipinanganak sa Cebu City ng kanyang inang taga-Mandaue City, sa Olympic qualification matapos maglista ng 320 points sa kanyang third round finish sa World Championships noong 2019.

Nabigyan naman si Knott, gold medalists sa women’s 200-meter run at sa 4x100m mixed relay ng 2019 Philippine SEA Games, ng Olympic ticket sa pamamagitan ng universality slot ng World Athletics (dating International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF).

Naunang nag-qualify sina golfer Juvic Pagunsan, shooter Jayson Valdez, weightlifters Hidilyn Diaz at Elreen Ando, pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena, skateboarder Margielyn Didal, gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo, taekwondo jin Kurt Barbosa, rower Cris Nievarez at boxers Eumir Felix Marcial, Irish Magno, Nesthy Petecio at Carlo Paalam.

Inaasahang mabibigyan din ng Olympic slots sina golfers Yuka Saso, 2021 US Women’s Open champion at Bianca Pagdanganan.
