Athletics at taekwondo nangako ng medalya

INCHEON, Korea – Ta­nging ang athletics at taek­wondo lamang ang malakas ang loob na nangako ng me­­dalya para sa Pilipinas sa 17th Asian Games dito.

Kumpiyansa ang ba­gong pangulo ng Philippine Ama­teur Track and Field Asso­ciation (PATAFA) na si Philip Ella Juico na ma­na­nalo ng medalya si long jum­per Marestella Torres.

Sinabi ni Juico na ta­nging ang Olympian lamang sa kanyang koponan ang ma­­lakas ang tsansang ma­kakuha ng gintong medalya.

Ang pinakamagandang ipinakita ni Torres ay noong 2011 Southeast Asian Games kung saan siya lu­mundag ng 6.71 metro.

Ito ay mas mataas kum­para sa tinalon na 6.53m ni Jun Soon-ok ng Korea para sa gold medal noong na­karaang Asian Games sa Guangzhou, China.

“We are confident with Marestella,” sabi ni Juico kay Torres.

“She has come back fully after her break due to preg­nancy. She is good for a gold medal when she sees action today. And who knows, she might realize her aim of succeeding to the throne of Elma as the Asia’s long jump queen?”

Kagaya ni Juico, mala­ki rin tiwala ni taekwondo coach Ro­berto Cruz sa kanyang mga atleta para makasikwat ng medalya.

“We have not won a me­dal in the Asian Games. But it’s time we do,” wika ni Cruz. “Kahit makaisa kami, hin­di pa ka­mi nananalo ng gold sa Asian Games. Puro sil­ver lang.”

Ang nasabing mga Asiad silver medals ay nagmu­la kina Bobby Vargas (Hiroshima, 1994), Donald Geisler (Bu­­san, 2002) at Tsomlee Go (Qatar, 2006).

Umaasa si Cruz na ma­kakakuha ng medalya sina fea­therweight Pauline Louise Cruz, lightweight Butch Mor­rison, middleweight Chris Uy at welterweight Al Bautista.

Ang 18-anyos na si Pau­line Louise Cruz ay nanalo ng gold medal sa 2013 Asian Youth Games na idi­naos sa Nanjing, China.
