MANILA, Philippines — Filipino weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz made history on Monday in Tokyo, Japan at least three times in a single day.
First, she broke the Olympic record for women's event with her 224-kg total to overtake reigning champ Quiyun Liao of China who earlier set a 223-kg record.
Then she earned the country's first-ever Olympic gold medal, which she received in tears.
Diaz afterward made a long salute as an sergeant of the Philippine Air Force as the Philippine national anthem "Lupang Hinirang" is played at the Summer Games for the first time. — Video by Luisa Morales
