MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines, through Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), bagged major awards in the Asia-Pacific Day of Action contest of American non-profit organization United Way Worldwide (UWW).

PBSP earned the grand prize, “Day of Action with the Greatest Scale” for donating 550 storybooks to Maliksi Elementary School (MES) in Bacoor, Cavite, besting those from China, South Korea, India, Australia and Thailand. Its photo entry featuring Grades 1 to 3 pupils showing off their new books also won one of the Best Photo awards.

PBSP donated to MES, a PBSP-assisted school, to boost its “Drop Everything and Read” campaign. It also aimed to give kids access to reading materials in the comfort of their classrooms. The school library was converted into a classroom to accommodate its growing population. This resulted in an increase in non-readers and frustrated readers who comprise half of the 1,500 early graders.

The books were raised through PBSP’s “Give a Book” campaign.

Held yearly, the Day of Action is a global campaign of UWW that encourages everyone to work together and improve the building blocks for a good quality of life. These are education, financial stability, and health. PBSP is the partner organization of UWW in the Philippines.
