One thing that will mark each day is the preparation of baon for school, especially for the very young ones, who may not be fully awake when they set off from home. Hence they need to carry with them substantial nourishment to last them at least two to three hours until they get back home.

A few days ago, our little one wanted pizza for a snack. Considering there was none available, she opted for pizza crackers. Brilliant yaya produced a delightful snack for the hungry little girl. So a pack of Skyflakes became delightful pizzas. This triggered an idea to make this Sunday’s column focus on a few items that can comprise practical and delicious food to bring to school.

Pizza Crackers: Spread each cracker with either tomato sauce or catsup. Top with grated Parmesan cheese. Place all of the crackers in a food saver with a tight lid. Allow the kid to bring a tetra-pack beverage, preferably fruit flavored.

Asparagus Rolls: If the young one likes this vegetable, put one on a piece of loaf bread and spread mayonnaise over it, then roll and seal with a toothpick. You might have to cut off the sides of the bread.

Tuna Magic: Get a can of chunky tuna. Cut a pan de sal in the middle. If lettuce is available, make a bed of it for the tuna on the bread, and top with prepared mustard and pickle relish.

You need not concentrate on bread items alone. You might want to alternate them with fruits, like apples and grapes or even bananas. Or if they are up for it, maybe sticks of carrots or cucumber can be given to them.

Here is a recipe for Salmon  Head Curry: You can find salmon heads in practically every supermarket. Cut each head into half, crosswise. Marinate in Worcestershire sauce and ground pepper for at least three hours or overnight. Sauté one stalk each of leeks and celery, cut into two inches long, plus diced onion and tomatoes. Roast two tablespoons of cayenne powder and three tablespoons (or more, according to taste) each of cumin and curry powder. Let cook for a while then add the salmon heads and the marinade. Let simmer. Add one half cup coconut cream and half an apple, sliced into thin cubes. Cook until liquid is reduced. Serve with chutney, hardboiled eggs, raisins and bacon bits.

The spate of violence that rocked the US and the UK sent alarm signals to us. Some fanatics just have the idea to create havoc in our country and other parts of the world. We hope our police and military forces are prepared for any eventuality. Maybe they should double or even triple the security forces deployed in commercial centers, malls, and other public places, even schools. Said establishments should also be as alert. They cannot risk the lives of people who come and shop, work in offices or attend classes everyday. What has become of humankind?
