The future of fashion

Mall-goers had a glimpse of the future of fashion during Slim’s Fashion & Arts School’s Best of Student Work 2016 exhibit at the SM Megamall’s Mega Fashion Hall.
A joint project of the renowned fashion and arts school and SM, the exhibit was held as a part of the annual Best of Student Work event. It highlighted this year’s theme “Contrast,” which allowed students to explore contrasting colors, textures, fabrics and designs that initially seemed incompatible.
Twenty-seven garments were displayed at the exhibit, which showcased the talents and craftsmanship of Slim’s students in dressmaking, patternmaking, fashion designing and bespoke tailoring. All garments were designed, cut and sewn by students as part of their class projects, including the hand-sewn barongs.
A series of fashion sketches conceptualized and drawn by the Fashion Design students were also creatively displayed in hangers and clothes racks.
Slim’s Fashion & Arts School was founded in Manila by iconic Philippine couture designer Salvacion Lim Higgins and her sister Purificacion. Together, they wrote the highly technical lessons that continue to serve as a solid foundation for the school’s curriculum today, a procedure known as the Slim’s method. Today, siblings Mark and Sandy Higgins continue the legacy of their mother Salvacion through the school.
Graduates of Slim’s Fashion & Arts School move on to become part of the fashion industry and many have achieved success. They include Oskar Peralta (the school’s first ever graduate in 1961), Joe Salazar, Cesar Gaupo, Oliver Tolentino, Michael Cinco, Ezra Santos and Joey Samson.

Product manager for Women’s Category Clarish Barundia said, “This season is all about luxe fabrics like soft suede and delicate lace. Some of the styles to highlight are the romantic bow tie, tops with ribbons in front, cape dresses and bare shoulders.”
Meanwhile, assistant product manager for Men’s Category Nicole Alcaide added, “The Guess Guy Fall 2016 collection is mainly focused on the ‘modern man.’ We are offering a more diverse selection but we still have that classic Guess touch. We also want to cater to millennials. Of course, without completely shying away from what we are best known for, the timeless denims.”
