MANILA, Philippines — Bayan Muna party-list is seeking another term at the House of Representatives.
On Monday, the party-list’s representative Carlos Zarate went to the Commission on Elections to file Bayan Muna’s Certificaiton of Nomination and Acceptance.
Speaking to reporters, Zarate said that Bayan Muna has remained consistent in fighting against policies that are “anti-poor, anti-people,” including the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law, which the party-list voted against during deliberations at the House.
The law lowered income tax rates but also imposed additional taxes on other products like fuel. Rising prices have been attributed to the TRAIN Law despite government economists' assurances that the new taxes are only one factor in price increases.
The government, through presidential aide Bong Go, on Sunday announced the implementation of a second round of increases in the fuel excise tax scheduled in January 2019 would be deferred.
He also stressed that Bayan Muna has maintained a clean record, without allegations of corruption. “Those [elected] are not working to become rich,” he said in Filipino.
The party-list has one seat at the House of Representatives.
