Conference on studying abroad slated

MANILA, Philippines - On August 10, College Admissions Mentors for Peers (CAMP) in the Philippines will hold its annual CAMP College Conference, a one-day event in which over 150 high school seniors, parents and teachers can gain an in-depth look at the application process for international colleges and universities.

This conference will feature panels and presentations led by college students, parents and teachers. Topics include college life in the United States, the Common Application and financial aid. There will also be workshops on writing application essays and reviewing for the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT).

The keynote speaker for this conference will be Natashya Gutierrez, a graduate of Yale University currently working as a reporter for social news network Rappler. Other speakers include high school guidance counselors and members of the CAMP mentorship program.

Founded in 2012, CAMP Philippines is a student-run organization that conducts a peer-to-peer mentorship program to help high school students with the college application process. Mentors help with various tasks such as choosing colleges, preparing for the SATs, and preparing and editing essays.

CAMP works with a network of more than 100 college students who provide 100+ high school “mentees” with the support and resources that they need when applying to colleges in the Philippines and abroad. Between the June and August months, CAMP mentors conduct several visits to schools, reaching out to thousands of high school students.

Last year’s inaugural batch of mentees saw a successful 58 acceptances to over 30 colleges and universities.

The CAMP College Conference will be held at the AVR of the UP National College of Public Administration and Governance. This event is free of charge and registration is open to the public. Lunch and dinner will be provided.

The event is sponsored by McDonald’s, Andok’s, National Bookstore, Bar Dolci, Hybrid Social Solutions, US Philippines Society, The Beacon Academy and Dr. Jose C. Benedicto.
