Third wave

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

The Department of Health said that Cebu City is probably on its third wave of a surge of COVID-19 case. By wave, they mean a visual representation of a spike in the number of those infected. This came after months that the emergency operations center heightened their monitoring and protocol to establishments and the barangay. If only the wave was to wave goodbye to the virus that has been taking over our lives.

What went wrong? Well, we can't really say. But from what we can see, there is so much movement. If we compare last year's situation, only a few people were going around the metropolitan area. Checkpoints were in place to strictly monitor that only those who have official business to travel were allowed entry to the different cities and towns. Our province has already opened up its borders to those who want to go around for leisure. The economy has started to get back on its feet again. We are getting a feel of how it should be post-pandemic. So what went wrong?

Of course, with not enough scientific evidence, we can't really say why we have reached a third wave. It could be another variant, it could be because of complacency. It will be all full of could-bes. Now that the vaccination program is rolling out, maybe we can shift to that instead because there’s no way that the transmission of this virus will come to a full stop. What I'm seeing here is that the vaccination numbers will go up.

Then again, how? We go back to the reason why a lot of individuals are hesitating to be vaccinated. It is because they are scared of the side effects of the jab and the anxiety caused by fake news such as nanotechnology and so much more. I already had my first jab and the only pain I felt was a pang on my left arm. It felt like it was hit with a huge boulder, but it only lasted for 24 hours or so.

We cannot let that third wave become the reason that our quarantine status will be reverted. We have tried too hard to be able to open the economy again and the effort many put in will be wasted. If this continues, we might be heading to another dead end; a weird restart for all of us.

Anyway, the vaccination game has changed its rules. If you can't wait for our local government unit to contact you after you enlist, then a walk-in to any of the vaccination centers will give you a huge chance at a jab. Better yet, coordinate with the private sector helping out in this program. It feels like it is the survival of the fittest; the way you present your priority group will give you a better chance at a jab. Well, good luck, and we'll see how this wave will get by.
