Don Vicente Yap Sotto: Nyor Inting, “Ang Bisaya”, and his legal battles

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

The book was launched during the 144th birth anniversary (April 18, 2021) of Vicente Sotto, Father of Cebuano journalism, language, and literature. This was after the wreath offering at the Plaza Sugbo, fronting Cebu City Hall. The venue was at the historical, Rizal Memorial Library and Museum (renamed by Sotto’s daughter, Dra. Suga, a city councilor and Cebu’s first woman surgeon, adding the word “museum” through an ordinance) officiated by Bryner Diaz, head of the Cebu City Cultural and Historical Affairs Office (CHAO) (incidentally, this office was a creation and brainchild of Dra. Suga when she was city councilor).

The book authored by CEBUpedia is published by Balay Bisaya Publishing and is now available for sale at the Basahanan ni Lumaya (hotel’s mini library at the lobby) Palm Grass Hotel, Cebu’s Heritage Hotel (owned by the Quivelondo Family) along Junquera St., Cebu City. Kevin Lagunda of Bathalad Cebu helped in the making of the book and Josua Cabrera designed the book cover and layout.

Representing the Sotto Clan during the wreath laying were Ms. Minnie Sotto Yuvienco, daughter of Dra. Suga accompanied by her son, Jose Manuel “Dodo” Cuenco, presently the vice president of Toyota Cebu. Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III grandson and namesake of Don Vicente Sotto and his son, Quezon City Vice Mayor Gian Sotto (who married a Cebuana, Joy Woolbright, daughter of Eddie Woolbright, builder of the Beverly Hills and founder of Eddie’s Log Cabin) gave virtual messages for Don Vicente Sotto’s birthday.

CEBUpedia extends its heartfelt gratitude to the men and women of the Cebu City Cultural and Historical Affairs Office. Also, to Mr. Frederick A. Ong III, Director/Board of Trustee of Cebu Eastern College (founded in 1915) and also a commissioner of the city’s historical commission and Brig. Gen. Erik Miguel Remollo Espina, former Cebu City Councilor for their attendance.

A Cebuano patriot, Ernesto A. Elizondo Sr. (son of Mariano Elizondo and Praxedes Agagon) celebrated his 88th birthday last April 22, 2021. A former Cebu City councilor, chairman of the Cebu Integrated Arrastre and the legendary defender of the Colegio de San Jose-Recoletos College of Law, a basketball, boxing, and debating champ during his youth. Adelante Sir Ernie ug mabuhi ang bantogan nga bisaya.
