Toledo Trojans prevail in all-Cebu duel anew

Emmanuel B. Villaruel - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The Toledo City Trojans prevailed in another all-Cebuano showdown, this time against the Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warriors in the All-Filipino Conference of the inaugural Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online tournament played last Thursday night in lichess platform.

Bannered by International Master Rico Mascariñas and National Masters Rommel Ganzon and Rogelio Enriquez Jr., the Trojans of team owner Engr. Mardee Gacang De la Peña thrashed the NM Merben Roque-led Naki Warriors of Lapu-Lapu, 14.5-6.5.

The Trojans, who opened their campaign with a 13-8 beating of the NM Elwin Retenal-skippered Cebu City Machers, are also composed of playing team manager Felix Poloyapoy Jr., Richard Natividad, Glicerio Pardillo Jr., Bonn Rainauld Tibod, and Jean Edoloverio Gacang.

It was not all jubilation though for the Trojans as they were earlier trounced the Iloilo Kisela Knights, 16-5. Leading Iloilo’s charge are Grandmaster Joey Antonio and NM Cesar Mariano.

Toledo currently stands with a 2-1 win-loss record in a tie with fellow Cebu contender Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors, who split their games against the Zamboanga Sultans and the Camarines Soaring Eagles.

Manned by PCAP vice chairman Ariel Potot, NM Edsel Montoya, Mario Mangubat,  Allan Pason, Bernadette Galas, Rex Androe Cabuncal, Francisco Rivera, and Dione Patrick Minoza, Cordova bowed to Camarines, 16-5, but readily bounced back with a 13-8 victory over Zamboanga.

The Cebu City Machers, on the other hand, still groped for form after getting clobbered by the Iloilo Knights, 19-2, in what is by far the most lopsided match in the country’s first ever pro chess league.
